Quick Start

How to write Markdown live

Type Markdown on the left, see GitHub-flavored HTML render on the right. Toggle to preview-only or source-only when needed.

  1. 01

    Type or paste Markdown

Drop in any Markdown — a README, RFC, blog draft, or inline notes. The editor accepts the full CommonMark spec plus GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) extensions: tables, task lists (- [ ] / - [x]), strikethrough (~~text~~), autolinks, and fenced code blocks with language hints.

Paste from any source — Notion, Obsidian, Stack Overflow, Slack. Mixed line endings, soft breaks, and indented code blocks all parse correctly.

Need to convert from HTML first? Pipe through HTML to Markdown, then come back.

    Live preview via marked

HTML renders side-by-side using the marked parser with GFM mode enabled. Output is byte-for-byte close to GitHub's own renderer — same heading anchors, same fenced-code semantics, same task-list checkboxes.

Toggle Soft breaks to render single newlines as <br> — useful for chat-style Markdown where line wrapping matters. Off by default to match GitHub.

Tables follow GFM pipe syntax with alignment markers (:---, :---:, ---:) and render with a single pass — no separate plugin required.

    Switch view mode

Three layouts: Split (default — source left, preview right), Preview-only (distraction-free proofread), or Source-only (focused writing). The current mode persists across the session.

Use Split for active editing where you want immediate feedback. Switch to Preview when you're reviewing flow or hunting layout issues, and Source when you want the full canvas for long-form prose.

    Copy or download

Grab the Markdown source or the rendered HTML with one click each — both are kept in sync. Download as .md for your repo, .html for a static site, or .txt for plain-text archival.

Need a polished README next? Move to README Generator. Need a PDF? Markdown to PDF.

Everything runs locally — open DevTools → Network to verify zero outbound requests.

Pro tips

Author Markdown that renders everywhere

GFM is the safe default

GitHub-Flavored Markdown is the de-facto baseline (tables, task lists, strikethrough). CommonMark is stricter but ubiquitous as a fallback.

Soft-break behaviour varies

A single newline is a space in CommonMark, a <br> in GFM. Toggle soft breaks when source matters.

Escape inside code fences

Backticks inside fenced blocks need a longer fence — three becomes four. Use ~~~ if your content has many backticks.

Anchors are slugified

GitHub lowercases, strips punctuation, and joins with hyphens. Duplicate headings get -1, -2 suffixes.

Tables need a header row

The dash row sets alignment (:---, :-:, ---:). Use Table Aligner for diff-friendly columns.

Front matter is YAML

Triple-dash blocks at the top of files are parsed by static-site generators. Use the Front-Matter Validator to catch syntax errors.

Use Cases

When to use the live editor

READMEs, RFCs, notes, blog posts.

READMEs

Draft project READMEs with live GitHub preview. Render path uses marked with GFM extensions enabled (tables, task lists, strikethrough, autolinks), so what you preview matches what GitHub publishes bit-for-bit. Soft-break behaviour is configurable for chat-style vs prose Markdown.

GFM-compliant

RFCs

Long design docs benefit from side-by-side editing. Pairs cleanly with the Markdown Cheatsheet for syntax you can't quite remember — callout blocks, footnotes, definition lists. Output stays diff-friendly so style-only changes don't drown out real edits in PRs.

GitHub-perfect

Blog drafts

Compose posts in Markdown before publishing. Cross-platform safe: anchors, code fences, and tables behave identically on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Gitea. Heading-anchor slugs follow GitHub's lowercase-and-hyphenate rules so deep links survive a docs migration.

diff-friendly

Notes & journals

Quick Markdown notepad for plain-text first workflows. No server roundtrip — perfect for proprietary content you can't paste into a public tool. The full marked + GFM bundle ships with the page, so it works offline once loaded.

render-stable

Proofreading

Preview-only mode for distraction-free review. Front matter (YAML / TOML / JSON) passes through unchanged so static-site pipelines (Jekyll, Hugo, Astro, Eleventy) read it correctly. Pair with the Front-Matter Validator to catch syntax errors before deploy.

cross-platform

Teaching

Show students how Markdown maps to rendered HTML. Output is reproducible: identical input always produces identical Markdown, so doc-generation scripts can rely on it for snapshot tests and embedded into release workflows.
