Quick Start

How to use the Markdown Link Generator

Input your text and URL, select your link style, and copy the generated Markdown syntax.

  1. 01

    Input details

Input your link text (or image alt text) and target destination URL in the provided fields.

Parsing runs through marked with GFM extensions enabled — tables, task lists, strikethrough, and fenced code blocks all match GitHub’s rendering.

    Select style

Select your desired link style, such as inline, reference-style, or badge.

Soft-break behaviour is configurable: by default a single newline becomes a space (CommonMark), toggle on for chat-style <br> insertion.

    Copy syntax

Copy the automatically generated Markdown syntax block straight to your clipboard.

The preview is scoped under a .mde class so its CSS doesn’t bleed into the rest of the page. Output HTML is whitespace-controlled for clean diffs.

Pro tips

Author Markdown that renders everywhere

GFM is the safe default

GitHub-Flavored Markdown is the de-facto baseline (tables, task lists, strikethrough). CommonMark is stricter but ubiquitous as a fallback.

Soft-break behaviour varies

A single newline is a space in CommonMark, a <br> in GFM. Toggle soft breaks when source matters.

Escape inside code fences

Backticks inside fenced blocks need a longer fence — three becomes four. Use ~~~ if your content has many backticks.

Anchors are slugified

GitHub lowercases, strips punctuation, and joins with hyphens. Duplicate headings get -1, -2 suffixes.

Tables need a header row

The dash row sets alignment (:---, :-:, ---:). Use Table Aligner for diff-friendly columns.

Front matter is YAML

Triple-dash blocks at the top of files are parsed by static-site generators. Use the Front-Matter Validator to catch syntax errors.

Use Cases

When to format Markdown links

READMEs, docs, blog posts.

Inline Markdown Links

Generate [text](url) links instantly. The most widely used Markdown link format — works in GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, and every standard Markdown renderer.

Reference-Style Links

Keep long documents clean by defining links once as [label]: url and reusing them anywhere with [text][label]. Ideal for READMEs and documentation with repeated URLs.

Image Links in Markdown

Generate ![alt text](image-url) syntax with correct alt text — the text Google indexes. Perfect for README banners, diagrams, and documentation screenshots.

GitHub Badge Links

Build nested badge links [![alt](badge-url)](repo-url) for build status, license, and npm version. Shields.io compatible and GFM-compliant out of the box.

What is a Markdown Link?

A Markdown link is a plain-text syntax used to insert hyperlinks into web documents, documentation, and code repositories. Standard markdown files render this syntax as clickable HTML links. The basic inline format consists of square brackets containing the anchor text, immediately followed by parentheses enclosing the destination URL: [text](URL). Developers frequently use Markdown links in GitHub README files, technical wikis, and static blog platforms. While writing simple links manually is straightforward, using a markdown hyperlink generator prevents syntax mistakes, automatically handles URL escaping, and formats complex reference-style links, image links, and badges quickly.

Frequently asked questions

To create a standard link in Markdown, wrap the clickable anchor text in square brackets followed immediately by the URL in parentheses. For example, writing [TryDevTools](https://trydevtools.com) produces a clickable hyperlink pointing to the homepage. This clean inline style is supported by all Markdown parsers and engines.
Standard Markdown does not have native syntax for opening hyperlinks in a new browser tab. If you need this behavior, you must write raw HTML using the anchor tag with the target attribute, such as <a href="https://example.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Text</a>. Most major platforms, including GitHub, automatically handle safety attributes when parsing HTML within Markdown files.
A reference-style Markdown link splits the hyperlink declaration into two distinct parts: a label reference inline and the URL definition elsewhere. The inline portion uses the syntax [Link Text][label], while the URL is declared at the bottom of the document as [label]: https://example.com. This keeps paragraph text clean, highly readable, and easy to maintain when the same link appears multiple times.
You can add a title that appears as a tooltip on hover by placing the title text in quotation marks inside the parentheses after the URL. The correct syntax is [Text](URL "My Title Tooltip"). Make sure there is a space between the destination URL and the opening quotation mark of the title.
Yes, all links generated by this tool are fully compatible with GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) and other common specifications. This includes standard inline links, reference-style definitions, images, and nested badges used in project repositories. The output will render perfectly in any README, issue, pull request, or markdown editor.
