info · about ascii

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) maps 128 codepoints to 7-bit integers. Codes 0–31 and 127 are control characters; 32 is space; 33–126 are printable.

• 0–31 / 127 — control codes (CR, LF, DEL...)
• 32 — space, 33–47 punctuation
• 48–57 — digits 0–9
• 65–90 — A–Z uppercase
• 97–122 — a–z lowercase

Quick Start

Read & filter the ASCII table

Every code is shown in four bases plus its glyph and meaning. Filter by typing any value in any column.

  1. 01

    Scan the columns

Decimal, hex, octal, binary all line up.

Inputs are treated as UTF-8 throughout the pipeline and validated client-side as you type — nothing dispatches until the value is well-formed.

    basesinpututf-8client-sidevalidated
    row · text65 · set
    65 0x41 0101 01000001 A
    loaded · parsedclient-side
  2. 02

    Filter to narrow

Type a number, hex pair, char, or description.

Each toggle re-computes through a memoised hook, so flipping options never resets your input and the UI stays snappy on large inputs.

    filteroptionslivememoisedtoggles

    Matches 0-9
    options set · memoisedlive
  3. 03

    Click a row

The printable character is copied to your clipboard.

Randomness — where used — comes from crypto.getRandomValues, never Math.random. Heavy work sits in useMemo.

    Export the table

Copy the full filtered set or download as TXT.

Copy writes through navigator.clipboard and downloads use a Blob — zero network traffic. Same input plus same options always yield the same bytes.

Pro tips

Pro tips for everyday utilities

Reach for crypto.getRandomValues

Cryptographically random for IDs, tokens, salts. Math.random is for animation and games, not security.

Sort IDs lexicographically

UUID v4 has no time ordering. Use ULID or UUID v7 if you need sorted IDs.

Mock data with seeds

Faker-style libraries can be seeded so tests are reproducible. Embed the seed in the fixture file.

Reference cards beat memory

Cheatsheets for Vim, Git, Docker, Linux signals are faster than man pages when you’re mid-flow.

Browser APIs vary

Touch events, gamepads, and clipboard differ across vendors. Feature-detect before use.

Persist in the right place

localStorage for user preferences, sessionStorage for transient state, IndexedDB for structured data.

Use Cases

Why an ASCII table

Encoding debugging, low-level programming, education.

Decode mystery bytes

Translate a stream of decimal or hex into readable text. Random values come from crypto.getRandomValues — cryptographically secure for tokens, salts, and session IDs. Math.random is deterministic enough for animations but predictable enough to be a security bug.

CSPRNG-backed

Embedded systems

Look up control codes when sending bytes to peripherals. Pair with hashids, ULID, or UUID v7 when you need both random and sortable — useful for primary keys, public-facing IDs, and event log ordering without a sequence column.

reproducible

Regex character ranges

Pick the exact codepoints when writing [\x20-\x7e]. Output is deterministic given the same seed, so fixtures and tests stay reproducible across CI runs and contributor machines. Embed the seed in the fixture file for full replay.

snappy

Bitwise tricks

Toggle bit 0x20 to flip letter case. Heavy work runs through useMemo so the UI stays snappy on large inputs. Same input + same options yields identical bytes — the kind of stability snapshot tests rely on.

feature-detected

CSV/protocol authoring

Pick delimiters: 0x1F unit, 0x1E record. Storage tools persist to the right backend: localStorage for user preferences, sessionStorage for transient state, IndexedDB for structured data. Pick the right shelf and quota worries disappear.

deterministic

Teaching

Show students how text is just numbers under the hood. Browser feature detection: clipboard, fullscreen, gamepad, and Web Bluetooth APIs gracefully fall back when unavailable. No surprise white screens on Safari or older Firefox.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

ASCII only defines 0-127. Codes 128-255 vary by extended encoding (Latin-1, Windows-1252, etc). Use Unicode for full Unicode support.
They are control characters — CR, LF, BEL, etc. Not glyphs. We show a placeholder dot.
0x is hex; \u is a Unicode escape (e.g. \u0041 = A). For ASCII the values match.
Use Copy table to grab the full filtered list as tab-separated text.
No. The whole table is bundled with the page — everything runs locally in your browser.
